Medication Overview

  • Abilify (aripiprazole) is a medication that works by helping to balance chemicals in the brain, such as dopamine and serotonin, which can improve mood, energy levels, and overall functioning.

  • It is commonly used as an add-on treatment for depression when other antidepressants alone are not enough.

Dosage Schedule

  1. Starting Dose:

    • You will begin with 2 mg once daily.

    • It can be taken with or without food, at a time of day that works best for you. Some people find it works better in the morning to avoid restlessness at night.

  2. Increasing the Dose:

    • After 1 week, your dose may be increased to 5 mg daily based on how you feel and any side effects you experience.

    • Always follow your healthcare provider’s instructions.

What to Expect

  • Time to Benefit:

    • Some improvement (e.g., less irritability or increased energy) may be noticeable within 1–2 weeks.

    • Full effects on mood may take 4–6 weeks.

  • Side Effects:

    • Common side effects include:

      • Restlessness or feeling "on edge" (called akathisia).

      • Trouble sleeping (insomnia).

      • Nausea, headache, or dizziness.

      • Increased appetite or mild weight gain.

    • If these are bothersome or severe, let your provider know. There are ways to manage side effects.

Important Tips

  1. Consistency is Key:

    • Take the medication every day at the same time.

    • Do not stop taking Abilify without talking to your doctor, even if you start to feel better.

  2. Monitor for Side Effects:

    • Pay attention to how your body reacts in the first few weeks.

    • If you feel excessively restless, have trouble sleeping, or notice any unusual movements (like shaking or stiffness), call your healthcare provider.

  3. Mood Monitoring:

    • Track your mood and energy levels daily. This helps your provider adjust your dose if needed.

    • Let your provider know if your depression symptoms worsen, especially if you have thoughts of self-harm or suicide.

  4. Lifestyle Support:

    • Maintain a regular sleep schedule and avoid caffeine late in the day to reduce insomnia.

    • Eat balanced meals and stay active to manage any changes in appetite or weight.

Follow-Up

  • Schedule a follow-up appointment after starting the medication (about 2–4 weeks later) to review your progress and adjust the dose if necessary.

  • If you experience any severe side effects or worsening of symptoms, contact your provider immediately.

When to Call Your Provider

  • You feel worse (e.g., more depressed, anxious, or agitated).

  • You experience unusual movements or severe restlessness.

  • You have significant trouble sleeping or feel excessively tired.

  • You have thoughts of self-harm or suicide.

By following this plan and staying in communication with your provider, Abilify can help you feel more stable and improve your overall mood.
